Why you might hear gunshots near the Fresno airport

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Fresno residents might hear some gunshots and explosion sounds near the Fresno Yosemite International Airport beginning Wednesday, the United States Air National Guard’s 144th Fighter Wing announced on Tuesday.

According to officials, a military training exercise will be conducted from May 15 to May 19 at the Fresno ANG Base. Residents may hear increased aircraft noise, simulated explosions, and simulated gunfire coming from the installation and the area near the north side of the Fresno Yosemite International Airport, adjacent to the Airways Golf Course.

The exercise window will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and officials say increased numbers of military aircraft, including F-15C Eagles and F/A-18E Super Hornets, will also be taking off and landing at the airport.

The exercise is required to evaluate the operational readiness of the men and women of the 144th Fighter Wing while testing the wing’s aircraft generation capabilities.

Airmen from all career fields will work together to perform the wing’s missions while responding to both conventional attacks and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) attacks, according to officials.

Officials with the 144th Wing say most activity will not be visible from McKinley Avenue nor the surrounding area, but the sounds of explosions and gunfire may be heard coming from the base areas of the base.
