Here’s why you may see a helicopter flying over Central Pennsylvania
YORK COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)– A helicopter will be in the sky Wednesday flying over parts of Central Pennsylvania.
York County Office of Emergency Management posted on Facebook that a black and silver Bell helicopter with N651HA emblazoned on its side will be in the air.
According to the post, the reason for the helicopter is because the state’s Department of Environmental Protection will be spraying for black flies along Conewago Creek in York County.
“The goal of the Pennsylvania Black Fly Suppression Program is to reduce adult black fly (gnat) populations to tolerable levels during the spring and summer recreational season using environmentally compatible methods,” the DEP’s website reads.
Black flies are smaller than a house fly, measuring about 1/8″ in length, and are often called gnats. It is recommended by the DEP that people do not swat at these flies because they will quickly return and can fly into people’s eyes.
