Why the lack of storms; warmer days for the Big Country ahead

ABILENE, Texas (BCH Weather) – Some of you may be wondering why there was a lack of severe storms here in the Big Country on Tuesday. We had a slight risk for severe storms for the entire area and a moderate risk for the Heartland. As we close out Severe Weather Week, we’re welcoming a warm weekend.

Severe Big Country weather brings threat of hail storms

Around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, there was a complicated set up in the area for storm development here. There were lots of boundaries draped across the area (cold front in blue, stationary front in red/blue, dryline in brown, and outflow boundary in yellow).

We saw some development near the boundary intersections, but nothing sustained as the boundaries move by, and the storms dissipate as they become elevated. Any storms that did develop in the Big Country remained sub-severe, but did produce some small hail and brief downpours.

Just south of our area in the Conco Valley, and also south of those frontal boundaries, storms were able to fire up rapidly due to a more favorable environment.

There were several severe thunderstorm warnings for Mason, McCulloch, and San Saba counties, and briefly a tornado warning for northeastern Mason County. The storms produced golf ball to tennis ball sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour along with dangerous lightning.

We are finally done with severe weather for the week here in the Big Country. It was noticeably cooler Wednesday behind the frontal passage, and as the low-pressure system moves off to the east. Winds will be doing what they do best, and that is gusting up to 40 miles per hour.

More good news is that we will see a nice warming trend beginning Thursday and continuing through the weekend. Temperatures will be back into the 80s by Friday, and potentially the 90s in some areas Saturday. Most areas will be in the low 90s by Sunday.

Winds will drop off a little bit for Thursday, but gusty conditions will return Friday into Saturday with southerly wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour.

Enjoy the cooler weather while we have it. It will get a bit toasty this weekend. BCH meteorologists will keep you updated with all things regarding weather here in the Big Country.
