Why KXAN visited 34 Central Texas hospitals to check security barriers

AUSTIN (KXAN) – When a sedan rammed into the emergency room waiting area at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center in February, it left the driver dead, at least five injured, and crystalized security gaps at hospitals in Texas and across the country, a KXAN investigation found.

To find out how protected medical facilities in Central Texas are, KXAN investigators visited 34 major area hospitals with emergency rooms over the course of several days. We found 18 hospitals had bollards, nine had partial coverage and seven had none.
