Why We Need Jon Stewart Back Before Election Day

From Esquire

It's just two jokes.

In the first one, Jon Stewart begins by talking about Joe Biden:

"He'll say whatever he kind of thinks of, whatever comes to his mind, sort of impulsive. Sometimes, you might think to yourself, 'That sounds crazy,' or 'Man, that is crazy.' And who would have thought that now, that gets you the Republican nomination."

Then:

"Don't worry, Trump's gonna keep you busy when he's commander-in-chief. You're going to have to repaint all the planes with 'TRUMP' in big gold letters."

Stewart told these jokes on Thursday night in front of a crowd of military personnel and their families. He told the jokes while introducing the vice president of the United States.

The man is fearless. He's empathetic-as evidenced by his charitable work, and many emotional moments on The Daily Show. He calls out bullshit no matter the title, organization, or political affiliation of the offender. And he's been gone for nine months. This has been nine months dominated by the most vile, shameful election of the modern era. This has been nine months where the country has been publicly embarrassed by an angry half-melted CPR doll becoming the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Stewart is gone, and we need him now more than ever to call out media organizations for their ongoing coverage of a taco bowl (yes, that includes us). We need him every night to address the daily unbelievable garbage falling out of the 2016 campaign. We need him before the election.

And he might return just in time. HBO CEO Richard Plepler said he's "hopeful" that Stewart-who signed a four-year production deal with the network-will return before the general election in November. Stewart "has free reign to do whatever he wants," Plepler said.

Save us, Stewart.
