Why ‘Gilmore Girls’ Rejected Ryan Gosling

Ryan Gosling bombed his Gilmore Girls audition? That’s right, the Canadian dreamboat was almost some quote-unquote “football character” on the long-running WB series, but his tryout went so poorly, it almost ruined a casting director’s credibility.

At the inaugural Gilmore Girls Fan Festival in Washington Depot, Connecticut, casting director Jami Rudofsky told the story… “I rolled my eyes because he was late, and he was blond.”

Well, I didn’t know we were all hating blonds again… Anyway, Gosling was fantastic and Rudofsky was soon advocating for him to Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, calling him “the best actor” and “amazing.” And then, they brought him in to read a part. “He auditioned, and it kind of fell flat. And Amy was like, ‘Really, Jami?’”

Really, Jami. Although the snappy, fast-paced dialogue wouldn’t have been a good fit for Mr. Stand and Stare, the blond actor was doing just fine for himself on TV. In 1995, he’d landed his first role on an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? (as all Canadian child actors did at the time). In 1996, he was on an episode of the equally spooky Goosebumps. And from 1998 to 1999, he played the titular role in Young Hercules and dedicated his time to perfecting the Blue Steel for the show’s DVD box art.

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premieres Nov. 25 on Netflix.
