A recent New York Times article detailing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his association with the wealthy and powerful includes a mention of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Jones and Thomas are both members of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, a non-profit group that honors the achievements of Americans who have succeeded in spite of adversity.

According to the New York Times, the inner circle of the organization is extraordinarily wealthy and conservative.

Jones and Thomas met when Thomas filmed a PSA for the Dallas Cowboys, Thomas’ favorite team, in the 1980s and the two would strike up a friendship afterward.

The article claims Thomas rode on Jones’ private jet, attended Cowboys training camp and received a Super Bowl ring from Jones. The Cowboys have won five Super Bowls, the last a 27-17 win to cap the 1995 season.

Thomas was also friendly with then-Miami Dolphins owner Harry Wayne Huizenga Sr. and reportedly flew on a private plane with the Dolphins logo emblazoned on the side.

Thomas has been the subject of public scrutiny for his relationship with billionaires such as Harlan Crow.
