An Iowa woman who suffocated her stepmother with a pillow and bragged about it on Snapchat was found guilty on Monday, May 20.

Samantha Bevans, 35, was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2022 death of 58-year-old Jodie Bevans, per The Gazette, KWWL, and KCRG.

Her boyfriend, Tacoa Talley, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison last year in the killing, KWWL reported.

Prosecutors said Bevans killed her stepmother out of revenge for kicking her out of the house, per The Gazette.

Jodie, who died by asphyxiation, was asleep when she was suffocated with a pillow. The rest of the family was away on a camping trip when the attack occurred.

“A slow way — up close, personal way — to kill someone,” Assistant Iowa Attorney General Monty Platz told the jury, according to the Gazette.

He said Jodie, because she was asleep, was unable to "put up a fight," per the Gazette.

During the trial, prosecutors showed the jury a Snapchat video of Bevans seemingly confessing to the slaying.

“I killed her,” Bevans allegedly said, per the Gazette. “I killed her myself.”

“And I knew this would happen, so good job,” Talley said on the video.

“We killed her,” Bevans said, per the Gazette.

Bevans told the jury that she made the video because she was mad at Talley and wanted to get a reaction from him, according to the Gazette.

She also testified that Talley was the one who killed Jodie, per KCRG.

Prosecutors also asked Bevans about a to-do list she wrote that contained the words, “Kill Jodie,” per KCRG. She claimed she was on meth when she penned the list, according to KCRG.

Sentencing is scheduled for mid-June, per KWWL.
