GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered all U.S. and Michigan Flags within the State Capitol Complex and at all public buildings and ground to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday to honor fallen U.S. Marine Capt. Miguel Nava.

Nava, from Comstock Park, and four other Marines were killed on Feb. 6 during a training flight. Their helicopter crashed in poor weather while they were flying from Creech Air Force Base, northwest of Las Vegas, to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

“Captain Miguel Nava represented the best of Michigan as he served our nation in uniform,” Whitmer said in a release. “A proud husband, father, son, and brother, he made a real difference in the lives of the people he loved. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership that we should all strive to live up to. Our hearts go out to Captain Nava’s family, friends, and fellow Marines through this difficult time. We will always be here for you.”
