Whitfield County candidates for office emerge

Jan. 19—Registration forms for various Whitfield County government offices are beginning to trickle in through the Georgia Campaign Finance Commission (GCFC) reporting system.

As of Jan. 17, three forms have been submitted from candidates eying the position of Whitfield County sheriff.

Darren Jeffery Pierce, of Rocky Face, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions on Jan. 8.

Vernon Glenn Tate, of Dalton, filed a similar declaration on Jan. 11.

Pierce's party affiliation is listed as Republican. Tate's form does not specify any political party affiliation.

A third sheriff candidate, Travis Glenn Presley, of Dalton, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions on Jan. 17.

His political party affiliation is also listed as Republican.

The latest GCFC filing on record from Whitfield County Sheriff Scott Chitwood, a personal financial disclosure statement, was dated June 2, 2023.

As of Jan. 16, two candidates have declared their intent to run for Whitfield County coroner.

Whitfield County Coroner Clyde McDaniel Jr., of Cohutta, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions form on Jan. 3.

That same day, he filed an affidavit to not exceed $2,500 in contributions and/or expenditures.

Colt Chandler Helton, of Dalton, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions on Nov. 29, 2023, along with an affidavit to not exceed $2,500 in contributions and/or expenditures.

Both candidates list their political party affiliation as Republican.

GCFC records indicate that coroner candidate Gregory Bates, of Tunnel Hill, filed a "campaign contribution disclosure final report and termination statement" with the commission on June 8, 2023.

Records indicate Whitfield Superior Court Clerk Babs Bailey, of Rocky Face, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions and an affidavit to not exceed $2,500 in contributions and/or expenditures on Dec. 29, 2023.

Bailey's political party affiliation is listed as Republican.

Jevin Jensen, current Whitfield County Board of Commissioners chairman, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions form on Dec. 29, 2023.

A subsequent campaign contribution disclosure report for the Committee to Elect Jevin Jensen was filed on Jan. 2.

At that time, the committee's total net balance on hand was listed as $1,009.92.

The document indicates that the committee received a $1,000 loan from Jensen on Dec. 18.

Jensen, who is seeking a commissioner at large seat, lists his political party affiliation as Republican.

Christian Phillips, campaigning for the District 2 Board of Commissioners seat, filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions on Dec. 17, 2023.

A follow-up affidavit to not exceed $2,500 in contributions and/or expenditures was filed on Dec. 28, 2023.

Phillips' political party affiliation is listed as Republican.

On Jan. 9, Robby Edward Staten filed a declaration of intention to accept campaign contributions.

The incumbent for the aforementioned District 2 Board of Commissioners seat, Staten's political party affiliation is listed as Republican.
