White Sulphur Springs residents voice concerns on potential slaughterhouse

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (WVNS) – The citizens of White Sulphur Springs have growing concerns about a new business expanding in Greenbrier County.

The business is not just a bakery or a new diner – it’s a slaughterhouse. Mountain Steer Meat Company opened their business around a year ago, but they now want to open a slaughterhouse in town.

Resident M.J. Oref is concerned for what this business could do to the future of White Sulphur Springs.

“If it smells like high heaven, who is going to want to be here? Who is going to settle here in our town? I have property value here. The times are hard,” said Oref.

Citizens’ concerns do not only stem from property value. They are also concerned about the chance of water pollution, air pollution, and the disposal process.

Former Zoning Officer Marie Lewis spoke about the town’s zoning ordinance and what ground rules are set in place.

“These things are permitted for conditional uses. There is a campground, a cemetery, a fairground, a kennel, and an off premise, free standing sign,” said Lewis

The location of the slaughterhouse is also right across from Food Lion and in front of a nursing home and two churches. Mountain Steer Meat Company stated in their presentation that the smell will be kept to a minimum.

The citizens are not convinced, however.

“There are multiple businesses that can be directly impacted by this. I believe they have not been addressed properly,” said David Leadman, resident of White Sulphur Springs.

“It’s a beautiful place. I got tired of the city, all the pollution, so I moved here to West Virginia,” said resident William Fanus.

Citizens say that city hall posted a notice of the potential building of the slaughterhouse on a bulletin board, but have not reached out to them directly.
