Whitburn takes early lead in San Diego City Council District 3 race

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Incumbent Stephen Whitburn has taken an early commanding lead in the San Diego City Council District 3 race, early results in the primary election showed Tuesday night.

As of results released shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday, Whitburn had received 54% of the vote, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Coleen Cusack and Kate Callen were battling it out for the second spot in District 3.

Results: California 2024 Primary Election

District 3 covers central San Diego, including downtown, Hillcrest, Bankers Hill, Normal Heights, North Park, Old Town, South Park and University Heights.

The first batch of results released Tuesday night were largely from mail-in ballots, those submitted via drop boxes prior to Monday, March 4 and other early voting opportunities.

Unofficial results will continue to roll-in throughout the remainder of the week and into next, as the county Registrar of Voters office continues to count ballots cast either in-person or mailed in on election day.

The results will not be considered official until they are certified by the Registrar, which will occur sometime before April 4.
