Where Have You Seen This Armani Privé Red Carpet Dress on Cate Blanchett Before?
Cate Blanchett opened the Cannes Film Festival in a recycled Armani Privé gown for the Green Carpet challenge.
When Cate Blanchett floated out at tonight’s Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony in a black lace gown, she turned quite a few heads—for more than one reason: Those who know their red carpet fashion history well will recognize the Armani Privé as the dress Blanchett wore to the 2016 Golden Globes, the year she won Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine. The actress, who is also the president of the the jury at the film festival, recycled the look not because of how good it looked on her (and, boy, did it look good), but, rather to show her continued support for the Green Carpet Challenge (or GCC), Livia Firth’s sustainable fashion initiative. “From couture to T-shirts, landfills are full of garments that have been unnecessarily discarded,” Blanchett says. “Particularly in today’s climate, it seems willful and ridiculous that such garments are not cherished and re-worn for a lifetime.”
Although many assume it’s simple to re-wear something on the red carpet, in reality, stars usually borrow their finery, so it can prove challenging for either a stylist or a label to track down a piece and refit it in time to get a celebrity ready for an event. For designers, it’s much simpler to create a new piece for a star to wear. It’s a pattern stylists like Blanchett’s own Elizabeth Stewart are hoping to change. “I think the stigma around re-wearing a dress is arbitrary . . . it’s a rule that will fade away like ’no white after Labor Day,’ ” Stewart says. “We don’t visit the Louvre expecting a new masterpiece each time. True beauty and art endure. I cannot support the waste of perpetuating a ’one-time only’ rule for a beautiful gown, and thought this was a great forum to demonstrate that.’ ”
Throughout the film festival, the GCC team of fashion supply chain and fiber experts will be working with talents like Blanchett, as well as fashion houses, designers, stylists, and even fabric mills and textile laboratories, in hopes of shifting the perception and production of fashion toward sustainability. “All of our GCC looks in Cannes this year highlight the strides that designers and stylists are taking,” Firth says. “Each look moves us further down the road towards a sustainable industry. It is no longer farfetched to imagine that we will soon have mainstream red carpet events entirely featuring sustainable looks. I believe that day is around the corner.”

The first electric vehicle I ever drove was a Tesla Roadster in 2011. It was with great anticipation that I slid behind the wheel of the 2025 Acura ZDX Type S. Sure, it's a midsize SUV, but it wears the Type S moniker, a name reserved only for the most fun-to-drive in the Acura stable. On launch, the ZDX will be available in A-Spec and Type S trims -- both of which come equipped with a 102 kWh battery.
