Where are the missing letters on Madera County’s sign?

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – You may have noticed a difference in the titular Madera County sign at Avenue 9 and Highway 41.

The sign is currently missing some letters. Instead of reading “MADERA COUNTY” it reads “MADE A NTY.”

Officials say it had been damaged in May 2023. Madera County Administrative Officer Jay Varney says the damage was caused by vandalism involving gunfire that left cosmetic damage to the coating of several letters.

Over time the damage to the sign became more unsightly and visible from the freeway according to Varney.

Varney says the damaged letters were removed Tuesday afternoon and sent away for repairs, instead of trying to repair them on-site.

Varney says he is hopeful that the sign will be repaired as quickly as possible.
