Gawd love The Great British Bake Off, and gawd love Rahul, 2018's winner.

With the nights drawing in, our thoughts have turned to warm bread. So we thought we'd take a look back at a who's who of Bake Off winners, and a little on what they've been up to since their big moment.

1. Edd Kimber (2010)

The first ever Great British Bake Off champion underwent quite the career change after his triumphant run, ditching debt collecting to become a full-time food writer.

He's churned out three books focused on the art of puddings, and he's gone on to become the host of popular podcast Stir the Pot, while keeping up quite the presence on social media.

Edd – who refers to himself as The Boy Who Bakes – believes he's made an impact after his big win in 2010, and he wrote in the Telegraph: "When the finale aired I still remember people applauding the idea that a man could win a baking show."

2. Joanne Wheatley (2011)

The following year, it was housewife Joanne's time to shine as the mum-of-three took the crown in what was the last series of Bake Off to feature fewer than 10 episodes.

Her life was totally changed by her victory. Since winning, she has since gone on to appear on TV programmes like The One Show and The Alan Titchmarsh Show, in between penning several books including A Passion For Baking and Home Baking.

More recently, Joanne – also bringing in the dough as an after-dinner speaker – has revealed plans to open her own café, country pub and restaurant.

3. John Whaite (2012)

Bake Off led to another big adventure for its third winner John Whaite, who was then 23 years old.

He was studying for his law exams in 2012 but after his win, he decided it was time to swap the courtroom for the kitchen – and he's not looked back since. After a string of TV appearances on programmes like This Morning and Sunday Brunch, he has become a resident chef on ITV's Lorraine and co-presents ITV's Chopping Block.

Pretty good going for the young baker, who continued his journey in January 2017 when he opened up his own cookery school on his family farm.

4. Frances Quinn (2013)

Many viewers were totally stunned when Frances Quinn pipped Rudy Tandoh to the post and claimed a surprise win.

Following her appearance on Bake Off, she's put her career as a children's designer on hold, and has turned her attention to baking for stars like Jools Holland and Clare Balding.

As well as being the mind behind the cake for The Shard's first anniversary, Frances – who is available for commissions for custom cakes – has appeared in Vogue magazine, and 2016 saw her release her own book Quintessential Baking.

5. Nancy Birtwhistle (2014)

The 2014 series saw another surprise for viewers, with retired GP practice manager Nancy beating all competition in what she described as the "most difficult" and "most enjoyable" experience of her life.

After winning Bake Off three years ago, Nancy was determined to make the most of her big moment and the opportunities it gave her. As well as producing a popular blog and going on tours across the country, the grandmother has released her own book and manages to squeeze in campaigning for charity organisation Love Food Hate Waste in her spare time.

6. Nadiya Hussain (2015)

Nadiya captured the heart of the nation with her emotional speech after winning Bake Off in 2015. She told viewers that she was done putting boundaries on her dreams, adding: "I can and I will!" Inspiring stuff.

Since then, she's proven those weren't just hollow words by going on to become one of the most successful Bake Off winners ever. Over the past two years, she's written for national papers, released her own cook book, presented Loose Women and even host programmes The Chronicles of Nadiya, Nadiya's British Food Adventure, The Big Family Cooking Showdown and Nadiya's Family Favourites.

But perhaps her crowning glory – ahem – came in April 2016, when she was chosen to bake a cake for Queen Elizabeth II in honour of Her Maj's 90th birthday.

7. Candice Brown (2016)

Candice has continued the Bake Off success story after her own triumphant journey, which saw her named star baker an amazing three times.

Following her win, she left her job as a teacher to focus full time on her baking dream, and has since released comfort-food recipe books and penned columns for The Times.

She also swapped icing for ice as part of the rebooted Dancing on Ice line up, though she was eliminated first.

8. Sophie Faldo (2017)

Channel 4's first winner Sophie was a former Royal Artillery officer, former surveillance consultant, former ski-touring instructor and trainee stunt performer before hitting the baking big time.

She makes personal baking appearances (you can see her at the Eat & Drink festival in Olympia, London on Easter Monday) and undertakes special orders – like this nine-tiered "behemoth" (her word) for HMS Belfast's anniversary.

You can get her recipes at her website.
