Where can you dispose of hazardous waste in Fresno?

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A disposal center for hazardous waste is now open in Fresno for those residents who have hazardous waste in their homes and want to get rid of it safely.

According to officials, the average home contains products with hazardous ingredients -in the house, the garage, and even the yard. The long-term impact of improper disposal can be harmful to the community and the environment.

Fresno Firefighters say the improper disposal of hazardous products can often require a HazMat team’s response.

Residents can dispose of these items at the Environmental Compliance Center (ECC) for free, according to officials. Items like aerosols, cleaners and drain openers, fluorescent bulbs and tubes of furniture polish, glues, hair spray, stain removers, weed killer, bug spray, antifreeze, auto batteries, fuel, and small propane tanks can be disposed of at the ECC.

Items that are not accepted can include some containers (empty of over five gallons), ammunition, explosives or fireworks, large appliances, mattresses, and over-the-counter medications, as well as prescriptions. For those, officials recommend the public to call the Fresno County Resources Division at 559-600-4259 or email recycling@fresnocountyca.gov.

The ECC Facility is located at 1327 West Dan Ronquillo Drive, and it is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. except holiday weekends. They offer residential services at no cost.
