Where Augusta attached the names of its former Mayors

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – It’s Augusta’s wall of fame the portraits of past Mayors; you may not know them, but you have heard of some.

“We’ve had some great public servants that have served this great city for a lot of years,” said Mayor Garnett Johnson.

The first Mayor was Thomas Cumming, probably no coincidence there’s an Augusta Street by that name.

But this former Mayor has a whole town named after him: William Dearing.

John Phinizy was Mayor, and Augusta has Phinizy Swamp; however, the swamp was not named for Mayor Phinizy: go figure.

Some of you may have spent time at Camp Linwood C. Hayne, there was a Mayor by that name, Scout’s honor.

This Mayor should ring a bell: William B Bell, as in the newly renovated Bell Auditorium.

This Augusta Mayor was not some big Vegas gamble; he’s Julian Smith of Julian Smith Casino fame.

Daniel Field Airport gets it’s name from Mayor Raleigh Daniel; it has been said he didn’t want the honor.

The Hugh Hamilton Memorial Bridge: you’ve probably been over it, but did not know it was named for a former Mayor.

Say hey! Augusta’s Public Defenders office name for Mayor Willie Mays.

Now, take a look at this handsome Mayor with the Smith Brothers cough drop beard.

Now as far as I know there’s no park, street facility, or rock band playing downtown named Foster Blodgett, but there should be.

“Foster Blodgett has a rich history and legacy and made great contributions to the city of Augusta. I would whole heartedly support that,” said Mayor Johnson.

They are places you know and go, and they are named after these faces on a wall.
