What's Open, Closed On New Year's Day In NYC

Many workers will start the new year with a day off. Here's what to expect.

NEW YORK — Times Square will once again host the nation's most famous New Year's Eve party this year. But the city is sure to be much quieter on New Year's Day, as many offices and stores will be closed.

Lots of government workers will get the day off and the subways should run like it's Sunday, but some supermarkets will be open for anyone who wants to start 2019 with a snack.

Here's a look at what's open and closed in New York City on the first day of the new year.


Government Buildings And Banks

  • City, state and federal offices will be closed on New Year's Day.

  • Post offices will be closed. Regular mail will not be delivered.

  • Libraries will be closed. Brooklyn Public Library locations will be open until 1 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

  • Many banks will be open on New Year's Eve, but closed on New Year's Day as it's a federal holiday.

Schools

  • Jan. 1 is the last day of the winter recess for New York City public schools.

Parking

  • Alternate-side parking rules are suspended on New Year's Day.

Public Transportation

  • New York City subways and buses typically run on a Sunday schedule on New Year's Day, though the MTA has not yet released detailed holiday service changes for this year.

Sanitation

  • There will be no trash, recycling or organics pickup on New Year's Day.

  • If Tuesday is your usual trash and organics pickup day, put your garbage out after 4 p.m. on New Year's Day for pickup the following day.

  • If Tuesday is your usual recycling pickup day, put your materials out after 4 p.m. on Jan. 1 for pickup starting Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Stores

Trader Joe's
Stores will close at 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve and will be closed all of New Year's Day.
Whole Foods
Stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on New Year's Eve and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on New Year's Day.
Costco
Stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve and closed on New Year's Day.
Target
Store hours will vary by location on New Year's Eve, according to GOBankingRates. Stores will reportedly have regular hours on New Year's Day.
Sam's Club
Stores will be open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve and closed on New Year's Day.
