Terrebonne Parish will celebrate its 200th birthday Oct. 15 with a parade and festival in downtown Houma.

The festival, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Courthouse Square, will include two stages with live music and storytelling. Cultural tents will offer live demonstrations of wood carving and basket weaving and display historical collections with information about Terrebonne’s history. And, food, including Cajun favorities, will be sold.

“The Terrebonne Bicentennial Festival and Parade is a celebration of our parish for the last 200 years,” Parish President Gordon Dove said. “While those years have been filled with many challenges, it has also been filled with rich culture, growth and the creation of deep roots for families in our area."

The parade, which will include floats, vintage cars and costumes that celebrate the parish's history, will start at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall building on Barrow Street. It will turn left on Main Street and end at the Courthouse Square.

"We are excited to bring people together to enjoy what makes Terrebonne Parish great: local food, great music, rich history and community," Dove said.

Proceeds will be used by the nonprofit Helio Foundation to help beautify Terrebonne.

The parade and festival are part of a series of bicentennial events, including panel discussions on parish history and culture. For a schedule, vist bit.ly/TerrebonneBicentennial.
