Wet spring delays Virginia corn crop
Virginia corn crop running late, should be arriving for July 4th celebrations
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia corn is arriving on the late side this season, but the traditional summer treat should by plentiful by the July 4th holiday.
The Virginia Farm Bureau says the wet spring has delayed the arrival of corn, though growers such as Don Reese in Halifax County say they should have some to pick this weekend.
Reese said corn was ready last year in early June, one of the crop's earliest arrivals. Typically mid-June marks the arrival of corn in Virginia.
Some parts of Virginia have received as much as 5 inches of rain above normal. Some growers have just planted corn, which should be available in June.
Another summer staple — cantaloupe — is also running late.
