Severe storms, rain/snow mix possible Monday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather has been issued for southeastern Tennessee for Monday. A few thunderstorms are possible through the late morning, but the severe threat picks up by the afternoon.

FORECAST: Middle Tennessee & Southern Kentucky Weather

The main storm threats will be strong wind gust, pockets of heavy rainfall, and hail. The chance for a spin-up tornado is slim but not zero. Instability and CAPE in the atmosphere will be short-lived but there is a small gap of time when severe weather is possible.

Severe thunderstorms are likely east of I-65 and begin through the mid-morning. There is a small gap of time when the atmosphere would be able to sustain strong storms. As of now, the time frame is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As storms move eastward they will start ramping up and get stronger. Use the arrows below to click through the time periods on Future Tracker.

Strong wind gust and straight line winds could cause problems as thunderstorms move through. Winds will push in from the west and could get up to 35+ mph.

Pockets of heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding or localized flooding because this rain comes after a soggy weekend.

SNOW CHANCE?

To top it all off, we will have a mixture of snow and rain move through on the tail end of the low pressure system that is bringing severe storms. The track of the low pressure system is crucial to possibility of accumulation. If accumulation does occur it will likely be north of I-40. However, the confidence of accumulation is low because temperatures would have to drop very quickly after storms roll through.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Todd, Christian, Muhlenberg, and Trigg counties from noon to midnight.
