Four people are dead after a terrorism incident in London, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley has confirmed. 20 more have been injured, some ‘catastrophically’.

A police officer died after being stabbed by a terrorist knifeman who was attempting to enter the Palace of Westminster. They have not yet been named.

The terrorist, who has been described as an Asian man in his 40s, is also dead after being shot by police.

Images showed the attacker, who was armed with two knives, being rushed into an ambulance, but it was later confirmed that he had died.

Two more people were killed when the attacker drove a car into a group of pedestrians on Westminster Bridge. He ploughed into a group of people as they crossed the bridge, leaving many injured.

He then drove to the Houses of Parliament, where he attacked police officers. He was shot as he attempted to stab a second police officer with an eight-inch blade.

A counter-terrorism investigation is now underway, police have confirmed.

Commander BJ Harrington said: “A senior national coordinator has declared this a terrorist incident.

“Although we remain open-minded to the motive, a counter-terrorism investigation is already under way led by the Met counter-terrorism command.

“We received a number of different reports which included a body in the river, a car in collision with pedestrians and a man armed with a knife.

“Officers were already in the location as part of routine policing but immediately additional officers were sent.”
