As a river town, Cincinnati bridges merit regular Enquirer attention.

Earlier this week, we reported on a temporary shutdown of the Purple People Bridge. We've worked a few bridge references into our recent stories about construction on the Norwood Lateral. And of course, there's our regular coverage of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project.

Today, we give the beleaguered Western Hills Viaduct some needed love. With its aging concrete, crumbling sidewalks and hardly-there shoulders, the 92-year-old structure doesn't have many qualities worth praising.

But it will by 2032 (or sooner) when a sleek single plane, with wide walks on either side, replaces the double-decker viaduct.

The project is heating up, as Duke Energy is installing eight giant telephone poles at the site in the coming weeks.
