Sinkhole closes I-70 westbound near Wolcott

DENVER (KDVR) — Part of westbound Interstate 70 near Wolcott in Eagle County was closed for safety reasons for a sinkhole on Tuesday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The closure was specifically between Wolcott and Eagle.

The sinkhole was first spotted just after 5 a.m. Tuesday, and a partial closure of westbound I-70 was put in place shortly after. Eastbound traffic was not impacted by the closure.

Crews observed the sinkhole growing. Heavy equipment was used to open up the pavement and observe the sinkhole, which was around 20 feet by 13 feet large and 8 feet deep, according to CDOT.

No water was found in the soil.

I-70 detour for sinkhole closure

CDOT said westbound traffic can detour at Wolcott (exit 157) onto U.S. 6 and then return to westbound I-70 at Eagle (exit 147).

According to CDOT, the sinkhole was confined and being filled in as of 2 p.m. and they believed the road would be reopened sometime in the afternoon.
