JACKSONVILLE, Texas (KETK) – West Side Elementary in Jacksonville celebrated students’ and the school’s progress on Monday.

“We do a growth parade every nine weeks to celebrate their accomplishments, so we kind of rolled it all into one today, and so any day that we can celebrate student accomplishments is a great day at West Side,” said Lindzee Campbell, principal, West Side Elementary School.

It was also an opportunity to honor the school’s advancement in a leadership program.

“I know that they will remember this forever, and I’m just fortunate to be a part of it,” said Brittani Howard, reading coach and lighthouse coordinator, West Side Elementary School.

At the start of classes in 2020, this Jacksonville ISD campus became a Leader in Me school. Leader in Me by FranklinCovey is a school model designed to nurture student leadership, trust and greater academic success.

Almost four years later, they have earned their Lighthouse certification. That means that they’ve continued being true to their Leader in Me status by teaching leadership principles and building a leadership culture, according to FranklinCovey.

“We were very honored to receive this accomplishment, that just means that you have a vested interest in the program, and you’ve seen some growth within it,” said Campbell.

Brittani Howard, the elementary school’s lighthouse coordinator said that’s what the initiative is all about, and them going up a level shows how far they have come in four years.

“They get to celebrate their accomplishments, their growth, specifically in reading for a lot of our students, we track their reading goals specifically, and I help with that a lot,” said Howard.

She added that this is all for the students.

“We truly believe that every student at West Side is a leader,” said Campbell.

West Side Elementary said they are now working towards becoming a Legacy lighthouse school, which is the next step up in the program. A status which one Tyler ISD school already reached.
