West Side Dairy Queen opens under new ownership

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It’s a new start and a new season for the Dairy Queen on Grand Rapids’ West Side after its former owners retired last year.

The business was scheduled to close permanently, but a last-minute deal between the owners’ daughter and a former co-worker saved the ice cream shop off Walker Avenue.

“It’s been great year after year to see just how things have evolved and changed,” co-owner Kaitlin Franklin said. “And now I own it with Jessie (the owner’s daughter), so I’m super excited!”

Grand Rapids Dairy Queen to stay open after all

The sweet shop opened for the season Thursday with a line of returning customers waiting outside.

“I’ve been here on the West Side my whole life. I grew up over here, so I’m glad they stayed open,” returning customer Tony Grant said. He and his wife Audrey enjoyed a tasty treat on the cold February day.

“So, we opened at 1 o’clock today on Leap Day and our line was out to the Dairy Queen sign out on the corner,” Franklin said.

The ice cream shop is now open daily through the summer from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The shop added a new punch card this year to encourage both new and returning customers to try some new treats.
