May 26—A West Scranton woman will spend up to three years behind bars for shooting another woman in the back during a dispute last year.

Kayla Sanchez, 20, was sentenced Tuesday by Lackawanna County Judge Michael J. Barrasse to 14 to 36 months in prison, followed by three years of probation, for her guilty plea Feb. 8 to a single count of aggravated assault.

Scranton police charged Sanchez with shooting Aliyah Ware after the two women fought outside a home in the 200 block of North Bromley Avenue on May 18, 2020.

Ware suffered a graze wound to her back and arm during the incident, police said.

As part of the sentence, Barrasse ordered Sanchez to have no contact with the victim unless approved by the court.

The shooting happened after Ware went to the North Bromley home with her girlfriend, whose sister rented a room there with Sanchez, to retrieve some belongings, according to the arrest affidavit.

Ware told police she remained across the street because she did not get along with Sanchez, but as she and her girlfriend were leaving, Sanchez came outside and confronted her.

The two women fought, and Ware forced Sanchez to the ground before the two separated.

Ware told police Sanchez then pulled a small black or brown handgun from her pocket, the affidavit said. Ware turned and ran as Sanchez fired three times, with one of the bullets hitting the victim.

Police later checked the scene, but Ware was gone. She was taken into custody later in the summer.
