West Jackson Street residence damaged in fire

Apr. 29—The single-family house at 1201 West Jackson St. sustained about $80,000 of damage due to fire Saturday afternoon.

Lockport firefighters rushed to the house at 5:50 p.m. and were greeted by heavy brown smoke coming from the roof in the center section of the structure.

Personnel from Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and Wrights Corners Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene.

According to Fire Chief Luca Quagliano, at least one of the occupants of the house was inside at the time of the fire and "three or four people" in were outside the house when crews arrived.

Within five minutes of their arrival, the fire had broken through a hole in the roof above the kitchen.

Crews worked for about two hours to extinguish the blaze.

"Crews had to perform extensive overhaul in the kitchen and living room in order to access the roof rafters and roof sheeting that were burning," Quagliano said.

American Red Cross was called to assist the two adults who reside in the house.

Investigators said the cause of the fire appears to be "unattended cooking." No injuries were reported.

Quagliano estimated the fire caused about $60,000 damage to the house and an additional $20,000 damage to contents.
