Saudi-Iran relations deteriorate: Saudi Arabia has given Iranian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country a day after Iranian protesters stormed the Saudi Embassy in Tehran in protest against the execution by the Saudi government of a prominent Shiite cleric. Tensions between the two countries complicates efforts to bring peace in Yemen, where they are involved in opposite sides of a civil war, and in Syria, where the U.S. is trying to cobble together an international coalition to fight the Islamic State group. Oregon standoff continues: “We’ll be here as long as it takes.” That was the word from Ammon Bundy, who, along with his armed supporters, stormed an empty building in a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon in support of two ranchers facing prison time for arson. As Marina reported, “Bundy and the armed protesters took over the headquarters of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, which was closed for the holiday weekend, after participating in a peaceful rally in Burns, Oregon, in support of” Dwight Hammond, 73, and his son Steven Hammond, 43, who were convicted in 2012 of committing arson on public lands in 2001. Chinese stocks slide: Trading in Chinese stock markets was suspended after the Shanghai Composite index, CSI 300, and Shenzhen Composite all fell sharply. The declines on the first trading day of the New Year came after economic data that showed the tenth consecutive month of contracting manufacturing activity.
