He went to report a stolen car. He got charged with being a hit-and-run driver

Christopher Shuman owns a bad driving record and, the Broward Sheriff’s Office says, a 2008 Nissan Altima. BSO says it came into possession of the car after Thursday’s hit-and-run death of Oakland Park resident Shrimaun Jadoo.

So, when the Lauderhill man went into BSO’s Pompano Beach district office Friday to report his car stolen, he arrived claiming to be a crime victim — and left charged with being a criminal. Shuman was charged with failure to stop and remain at an accident involving death and driving on a suspended license.

That’s a familiar violation to Shuman, 29. A pair of convictions for driving on a suspended license are among the reasons he’s paid $2,072.15 in traffic fines this decade, according to Broward County court online records. He’s also paid six tickets for not having children in proper child restraint seats and done probation for two counts of battery from a 2013 domestic violence arrest.

Shuman still owes $464.40, of which $409.05 is from an Aug. 4 speeding ticket for going 55 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 800 block of Northwest 31st Avenue.

Speed wasn’t apparently a factor in Thursday’s tragedy. According to the police report, Shuman was rolling west on West Oakland Park Boulevard in the 2800 block around 8:47 p.m. when Jadoo, 52, was crossing left to right in front of Shuman’s Nissan. Shuman hit Jadoo. Shuman then walked away from the scene, police said.

Jadoo was pronounced dead on the scene by a BSO deputy at 8:58 p.m. Meanwhile, deputies began running the plate of the Altima, which came back as registered to Shuman.

BSO says a relative of Shuman’s told detectives Thursday night that the Altima had been stolen. When and where this happened, the relative couldn’t say.

Friday, Shuman showed up at the Pompano Beach district office to file a stolen-car report. His arrest report says he admitted driving the Altima in the crash and realizing he had struck a person.

“When asked, Shuman explained that he was on his way to his sister’s residence when the crash occurred,” the report said. “After the crash, he continued to that location on foot.”

Shuman posted bond.
