A 92-year-old Mexican man is recovering in hospital in Los Angeles after being severely beaten with a brick by a woman, and told to “go back to your own country”.
Rodolfo Rodriguez was on his daily walk near his home when he accidentally bumped into a young girl while trying to pass her on the pavement.
The girl’s mother flew into a rage, shoving him to the ground and smashing his head with a brick. Four men then joined in, kicking and cursing the pensioner.
Bystanders then called the police.
Misabel Borjas told CNN that she saw the gang hitting him repeatedly. “I heard her saying: ‘Go back to your own country, go back to Mexico,’” she said.
“When I tried to videotape her with my cell phone, she threw the same concrete block and tried to hit my car.”
Mr Rodriguez told CNN that the woman accused him of trying to abduct her daughter.
“But that’s not true,” he said, in tears. “In all the years I have been alive I have never offended anyone.”
Mr Rodriguez was left with broken ribs and a broken cheekbone, and remains in hospital following the July 4 incident.
None of the attackers have been identified.
A GoFundMe account, set up by Mr Rodriguez’s grandson Erik Mendoza with the aim of raising $15,000, had accumulated $224,000 by Tuesday afternoon.
One woman said her dental practice would provide his dental treatment free of charge.
“I’m so angered that your grandfather was hurt,” wrote another, Joanne Kathleen. “What a huge accomplishment to be so active in his golden years.
“He should be treated with respect and dignity.”
