Wells Fargo to lay off 263 workers in West Des Moines, most at credit card call center

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- More than 250 Wells Fargo & Co. employees in the Des Moines area received 60-day layoff notices Tuesday, a company spokeswoman said.

Most of the 263 people work at the company's credit card call center in West Des Moines but a few also work in home mortgage and consumer loan processing, spokeswoman Angie Kaipust said.

The company is consolidating its call centers to operate more efficiently, she said.

If the employees cannot find another job in the company within the 60-day window, they will be eligible for separation benefits and job search assistance.

"We will work to keep as many team members as we can and to help them find other rolls," Kaipust said.

The company has job openings at call centers in other U.S. locations and a number of openings in other divisions in the Des Moines area, where Wells Fargo employs about 13,500 workers.

The company said in July it was eliminating 58 jobs in the Des Moines area's home mortgage unit, and last month, it said an additional 85 workers were given layoff notices.

The company said then the layoffs reflected the cyclical nature of the home loan business, which has seen interest rates creeping higher and slowing the pace of mortgage refinancing.
