In the Massachusetts Republican Primary on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump easily dispatched his closest rival for the 2024 presidential nomination, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Trump earned nearly 60% of the GOP vote in the Bay State, with Haley just under 37%.

The results, along with those of 14 other states on Super Tuesday, make the likelihood of a rematch of the 2020 election between President Joe Biden who cruised past minimal opposition on Tuesday and Trump a near certainty this fall.

But just for fun, what if Tuesday's GOP primary was decided only in MetroWest, as opposed to all of Massachusetts? Trump would have still won but it would have been much closer.

Haley was apparently seen as an attractive option for those taking a GOP ballot in Metrowest on Tuesday. Based on the results of 20 Daily News communities, Haley outpaced Trump in 11 of them, including three Sherborn, Wayland and Wellesley in which she earned more than twice as many votes as the former president.

Overall, in our imaginary 20-community state primary, Trump earned 19,266 votes to Haley's 19,032. Throw in the smattering number of votes for other Republican candidates who have since dropped out, as well those that were blank or contained write-ins, and both Trump and Haley are each a bit under 50%.

With 38,971 votes, Biden earned more than the two GOP candidates combined.

In any event, the attention now turns to Nov. 5. Four years ago, Biden took 65% of the Massachusetts vote en route to earning 306 Electoral College votes to Trump's 232.

Voter turnout in the 2020 election was the highest on a percentage basis since 1900.
