'A well deserved honor': Retired teacher recognized for decades of service

RAYNHAM – Kathleen Voller spent decades serving the community, both as a teacher, leader and volunteer. The Board of Selectmen celebrated her outstanding service to the town earlier this week by presenting her with the Raynham Recognition Award.

Voller, 71, is the latest recipient of the Raynham Recognition Award, for her decades of dedication as a teacher with the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School District, as well as her involvement in establishing several town programs that are still active today.

“It’s a well deserved honor,” said Selectman Joseph Pacheco.

Voller dedicated 34 years to the B-R school district, starting at Lillie B. Merrill Elementary before transferring to Raynham Middle School.  She taught almost every general subject, but being a math teacher is what she was most known for.  Voller retired in 2012.

“I have a soft spot for teachers.  It’s one of the most difficult jobs.  We really appreciate all your efforts,” said Selectman Kenneth Collins.

Voller was a tutor for even longer, working after school and even during retirement for 48 years, before finally retiring altogether about a year ago.

Voller said since retiring she has been able to travel the globe.

Founding programs

Voller is credited with helping start Raynham’s Summer Playground Program in the 1970’s with the town’s Parks & Recreation Department.  She worked as both a director and a coach.

Voller is also one of the founders of The Raynham Association of Volunteers for Education, Inc. (RAVE) in 1981, which brings together parents, teachers, staff and administrators in Raynham schools on various events, goals, and endeavors.

She is also a founding member of the Friends of the Raynham Library.

New tradition

This recognition is a monthly tribute awarded to a person or group for reasons ranging from a heroic act or kindness, a special accomplishment, or for years of dedication to the town.

“It was created to provide opportunities to celebrate positive efforts of a person or group deserving recognition,” said Selectmen Chair Patricia Riley, adding it is the board’s hope the award will promote appreciation and community spirit across the town.

The Raynham Recognition Award started in September of last year.  The board solicits input from the public regarding potential recipients of the award each month.

Voller's nomination came from Riley Menconi, a member of both the Conservation Commission and Parks & Recreation Commission.  “She had a huge impact on so many lives, including my own, as both a teacher and tutor,” said Menconi, in a letter read by Selectman Riley during the presentation.

In accepting her certificate, Voller said: “I grew up here.  I spent my whole career here, and now I get to spend the rest of my life and my retirement here.  Raynham is a wonderful community.  I thank you very much.”
