Weiner Reads Congress a Bedtime Story; Fey Goes Bowling

Anthony Weiner reads children's literature on the House floor, Billy Joel makes his book more attractive by canceling it, Tina Fey is — unsurprisingly — a good bowler, and Roger Federer runs paparazzi interference for Anna Wintour. It's a surprise ending with a twist in today's Smart Set.

  • New York Rep. Anthony Weiner, who raked in the laughs at the Congressional Correspondents' Dinner, took to comedy again last week when he read from a children's book on the floor of the House of Representatives. Making a point about due process, the congressman read aloud from House Mouse, Senate Mouse, which is sold in the Capitol Hill bookstore to teach children how government works. [NY Observer]

  • Billy Joel has decided not to go ahead with his memoir, the Book of Joel, which is fine, but then he had to go and explain why: "Joel said it took writing the book for him to realize he's not interested in talking about the past," The AP reported, which of course made every reader who was already in mid-yawn close their mouths and wonder just what in Joel's past could possibly be so bonkers. As Vulture notes, "now we actually want to read it." [Vulture]

  • In keeping with what seems a likely trait for her character on 30 Rock, Tina Fey is quite the bowler. She and Judah Friedlander (Frank, on the show) reportedly led the pack at the show's wrap party at Manhattan's Lucky Strike Lanes. [Gatecrasher]

  • Canadian singer Michael Buble got married to Argentinean actress Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre last week, and while the couple was out for their day of bliss, thieves burglarized their Argentina home. It just goes to show you don't need fancy computer programs to tell the world when you're not home. There's no word on what the thieves took, but they reportedly disabled the security system and covered the cameras, so they're at least competent burglars. [PopEater]

  • A Washington, D.C. radio news anchor is delighted to be having brain surgery. WTOP's Hillary Howard told Reliable Source, "I consider it a good-news story all the way around," after she slipped and fell down the stairs. She hit her head so hard she had to go to the hospital and get x-rays. That's when the doctors found a tumor known as a meningioma. “If I hadn’t fallen, they wouldn’t have known it was there," Howard said. "I feel like a little angel pushed my foot down the step.” [Reliable Source]

  • Tennis star Roger Federer knows the meaning of chivalry when it comes to celebrities and the paparazzi. After dining with his wife and a group that included Vogue editor Anna Wintour in Miami, Federer "created a diversion" so Wintour could get out of the restaurant unmolested. He and the group exited through the side door of the restaurant and slowly loaded their car while the photographers clustered and asked about Wintour. The editor, for her part, walked out the front.
