Wegmans holds allergy-friendly food drive with Buffalo Bills

UPSTATE NEW YORK (WETM) — Wegmans is partnering with the Buffalo Bills to hold a food drive for food-insecure families with allergies and dietary restrictions.

Customers at Wegmans locations across the Southern Tier, Central New York, and Western New York can purchase select allergen-friendly and special diet food items from now through May 18 for a food drive meant to raise awareness about food allergies. According to the Buffalo Bills, food drives are one of the best ways to raise awareness for food allergies, which are incurable.

The CDC says that one in 13 children have food allergies, and two of Buffalo Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott and his wife, Jamie’s, children are among them. The McDermotts are familiar with how difficult navigating food allergies can be and say they want to raise awareness and help families in need provide safe foods for their families.

“We are so very grateful for Wegmans and this partnership,” said Jamie McDermott. “It means a lot to us because we know we are not the only family that is affected by food allergies, and if we can help just one family by making it easier for them to access safe foods for their families, it will be worth it.”

All items purchased for this food drive will be donated to food banks located throughout the region. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier, FeedMore WNY, Foodlink, and the Food Bank of Central New York are among the organizations that will benefit from the drive.
