Weekly Rewind: Rumors hit of a 4G iPad, Apple announces Mountain Lion, and Hulu Plus finally comes to the Wii

Didn’t have time to keep up with every ripple in the technology pond this week? We’ve got you covered. Here are some of the most noteworthy stories from the last week.

Rumors surface of a 4G iPad 3 due out in March

While the iPad 3 rumors have been swirling for a while, we now have serious speculation of a March 7 launch date from a source that got it right with the iPhone 4S. Not long after that we got word of a Wall Street Journal report that claims that Apple is testing out an 8-inch model to compete in the smaller tablet market, and that the new iPad 3 might have 4G LTE capabilities. Even if Apple is testing an 8-inch tablet, we don’t expect to see it anytime soon, although it would likely be a smart move. The 4G LTE connectivity is a much more likely feature, especially since Verizon and AT&T (Apple’s biggest carriers) are the only two networks that offer the super-fast service.

In other Apple news, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is announced

Less than a year after the release of Lion, Apple announced that it has plans to launch a brand new operating system this summer called Mountain Lion. The release will integrate full iCloud synchronization as well as some features from iOS 5 like iMessage, Notes, and Reminders. Users running a Mac with Lion can download the free Messages Beta app (see our impressions here) for a sneak peek, although that capability for Lion users will disappear when Mountain Lion is officially launched. We broke down what users should expect with the new launch.

Hulu Plus comes to the Nintendo Wii

After a long wait for Nintendo Wii owners, the company announced that Hulu Plus will now be available on the gaming console and will soon be coming to the 3DS. The Wii only offers standard resolution instead of HD like the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, so all Hulu Plus programming will be kept to lower resolution, but users will be happy about the move no less. Users can now download the Hulu Plus app from the Wii Shop Channel. During the first month, Hulu Plus will be offering a free two-week trial to new members who don’t want to fork over the $7.99 monthly fee without testing it out first.

Samsung reveals the Galaxy Tab 2 running Ice Cream Sandwich

This week Samsung announced the updated Galaxy Tab 2, which will run on Android’s elusive Ice Cream Sandwich. The new 7-inch tablet has extremely similar specs to the older version, and running on Ice Cream Sandwich is by far the most notable upgrade, although it’s a huge one. The South Korean company also hinted that it might spin off its LCD business, in hopes of making it more competitive.
