THE 4.8 EARTHQUAKE THAT HIT NEW YORK CITY REGION ON FRIDAY, APRIL 5
Rare east coast earthquake with ten reported aftershocks as of Friday evening may have been felt by 42 million across northeast United States Friday. From Baltimore to Maine, it briefly shook skyscrapers in New York City producing a brief interruption reported to the a United Nations Security meeting. The tremor registered 4.8 and was centered 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia
Major damage hasn’t been reported. Quakes of this magnitude are much less frequent on the East Coast than in the West. Since 1950, the U.S. Geological Survey say there have been 20 quakes rated 4.5 or higher since 1950 while the same period has seen 1,000 such quakes across the Western United States.
