Weekend closures set for Bangerter Highway in South Jordan

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Planning to drive along Bangerter Highway in South Jordan this weekend? Then prepare for traffic headaches, or take another route.

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) said there’ll be lane closures over the weekend at 9800 South, starting at 10 p.m. Friday and lasting through early Monday morning.

During this time, east-west traffic on 9800 South will be detoured as crews install bridge supports. Additionally, northbound Bangerter will be reduced to one lane.

This work is part of a long-term project to remove stoplights at Bangerter intersections and turn them into freeway-style interchanges. Currently, work is underway at 9800 South and three other Bangerter intersections.

According to UDOT, drivers should expect delays near 9800 South this weekend, or use alternative routes such as 9000 South or 104000 South.

Another closure next weekend

More lane closures are also expected at the South Jordan intersection over the following weekend, March 15-17. During that period, 9800 South will close again, and Bangerter Highway will be fully closed for one night as crews remove a pedestrian bridge.

These weekend closures are stepping stones to more major closures. According to Marawan Farah, UDOT’s Bangerter Highway project director, the 9800 South intersection will at some point this summer close for roughly a year for crews to excavate the site and build the freeway-style interchange.

For about a decade, UDOT has been working to free up traffic on Bangerter by removing stop light intersections. So far, 10 intersections have been converted between 5400 South in Taylorsville and 600 West in Draper.

Aside from 9800 South, the other intersections where major work is expected this year include 4700 South in Taylorsville, 2700 West in Bluffdale, and 13400 South in Riverton.

Last month, UDOT said the year-long closure for the 4700 South intersection was expected to start in June. No date on the major closure for 9800 South has yet been set.
