A series of sporting activities, known as “GetActive! Singapore”, will be held islandwide from 30 July to 7 August in the lead up to National Day. Grants will also be given to encourage Singaporeans to lead these activities.

This initiative – which includes sports festivals and competitions – was announced by Sport Singapore (SportSG) on Tuesday (May 10). It aims to encourage Singaporeans to lead active lifestyles and to celebrate their national identity.

The annual Singapore National Games (SNG), which has been running for three years, will form the competition aspect of GetActive! Singapore. For the first time, SNG will be introducing para sports.

Mr Henry Tan, executive director of the Singapore Disability Sports Council, welcomed the addition of para sports. “Giving a chance to all athletes to compete at the highest level is a positive step towards spurring greater participation and creating inclusiveness,” he said.

In order to encourage more Singaporeans to organise these sporting initiatives, SportSG will grant corporate and community partners up to $25,000 for projects and $50,000 for mass events organised during the week. These grants can be used for events such as getting fitness instructors, facilitating in organising events, or providing venues to hold events.

Interested applicants can start submitting their proposals from 10 May 2016 till 30 June 2016 at www.getactive.sg

Mr Lim Yeck Yin, Chief Executive Officer of Sport Singapore, said the new annual event can help to bring Singaporeans together. “GetActive! Singapore will provide opportunities for all to have fun, play and compete, and forge shared memories together through sports and physical activities.” he said.
