‘A week before Christmas and it’s all gone:’ Fire leaves Jacksonville family homeless before Holiday

McCall and her husband Lewis Jones are left wondering what lies ahead before the Holiday season after a fire burned down their home off Yellowbluff Road and Foxwoods Heights Circle late Saturday night.

Peggy McCall had lived in her Northside Jacksonville home for almost thirty years.

Jones told Action News Jax his wife suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and threatened to take her own life after the fire left her and her husband homeless Saturday night.

Joshua Hulburt, the nephew of Jones and McCall, says his aunt is now getting the care she needs but was heartbroken by the loss of their home.

“It really broke her last night and that’s why we took her to the [Mental Health Resource Center]. When we left here she just started rambling and really lost it,” Hulburt emotionally told Action News Jax.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department told Action News Jax they received the call at around 8:30 p.m. Saturday and that the Florida State Fire Marshal is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

Hulburt says fire personnel was on the scene fighting the flames for hours, with much of the surrounding street blocked off.

While Jones is keeping his head high and says he’s just happy he, his wife, and their family dog made it out safely, the family says the home is still a total loss.

“No insurance, no nothing. So I don’t know what we’re gonna do,” Hulburt said defeatedly.

The family has started a GoFundMe to begin to rebuild what was once lost. That GoFundMe page can be found by clicking here.
