Weber School District confirms name, mascot for new elementary school

WEST HAVEN, Utah (ABC4) — The Weber School District Board of Education selected the name and mascot for a new elementary school being built to serve the West Haven community on Wednesday night, March 6.

After being presented with several options from the school’s naming committee, the board decided on “Haven Bay Elementary.” The mascot? The heron.

The Weber School District said it decided on the name due to the meaning of each word. “Haven” refers to a safe or peaceful place while “Bay” was added due to the school’s close proximity to Ogden Bay. From there, the school board said “Herons” seemed like a unique and natural fit for the school mascot.

According to the Utah State University Extention, great blue herons can be seen in streams and ponds throughout Utah, including Ogden Bay. They regularly nest in groups in trees located near lakes and wetlands.

Construction on the new school taking up the heron as its mascot is expected to be completed later this year. The school is scheduled to open for its first year of students in August for the 2024-25 school year.
