HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Tropical storm Wutip has made landfall in central Vietnam, uprooting trees and damaging more than 1,000 houses.
There was no immediate word of injuries or major structural damage. Wutip sank at least two Chinese fishing ships as it neared the coast, leaving 75 fishermen missing.
The national weather center said Monday that Wutip has weakened and is packing sustained winds of 117 kilometers (73 miles) per hour, meaning it is now classified as a tropical storm, not a typhoon.
Officials had evacuated people from the storm's path over the previous day.
Local government official Pham Huu Thao said Wutip had blown the roofs off of more than 1,000 houses.
