MIAMI - A tropical storm has formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Mexico.
The U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday afternoon that Tropical Storm Lorena is located 245 miles (394 kilometres) west of Manzanillo, Mexico. It has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (64 kph) and is moving to the northwest at 12 mph (19 kph).
A tropical storm watch has been issued for Baja California Sur from Agua Blanca to Buenavista.
Some strengthening is possible over the next day or two, and forecasters say Lorena will be nearing the southern portion of Mexico's Baja California peninsula early Saturday.
The storm is expected to bring 3 to 5 inches of rain to the southwest coast of Mexico and the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula, with some areas potentially getting as much as 10 inches.
