When you think about British automaker Caterham, you think about the Seven and its very classic look. A style that’s virtually stood the test of time since the brand’s conception in 1973. So, you wouldn’t really imagine a funky and futuristic concept such as this to come from the conservative Brits– but this is the AeroSeven, the latest and greatest new vehicle to come out of Surrey.
It’s the first wave in an ocean-filled with new Caterham products. Along with this, the automaker promises an SUV (that’s right, an SUV), and a smaller city car with a roof, doors and windows. Speaking up during the revealing of the AeroSeven in Singapore, Co-Chairman Tony Fernandes said, “Caterham will show itself to be a progressive, open and entrepreneurially powered car brand that will deliver and surprise in equal measure.” Beginning with the AeroSeven, continuing on with the two other new vehicles.
But back to the concept; as mentioned, it’s unlike anything we’ve ever really seen from Caterham in the past. Ditching the whole classic look, Caterham went for a very smooth, very sophisticated design approach, coating the AeroSeven in a healthy heaping of greens, yellows, and even some LED lighting.
Under the hood, we’re met with the 2.0-liter inline-4 off a small Ford, delivering up to 237 horsepower via a six-speed manual transmission. To 62 mph (100 km/h), the AeroSeven can manage in only four seconds.
Other new features include an F1-style adjustable steering wheel, traction control, a newly recalibrated suspension, ABS brakes and F1-inspired aerodynamics. It’s a new generation of high-tech, beefed up, Caterham’s for the track — in other words — this ain’t your daddy’s Seven.
As it sits, the AeroSeven is just a proof of concept for 2013. But Caterhman indicated that it very well may hit production sometime around 2014. We can’t wait.
