I recently spent some seat time in the absurd Audi RS5 Cabriolet, as we’ve previously documented. The V8 power makes it an absolute brute. But what if your desires were more refined than simply blowing other cars away at stoplights? The Audi A5 Cabriolet trades on technology, efficiency, and a level of style seldom found on the road today.
There are plenty of aggressive new designs taking shape from all automakers, but it’s not what you can do with computer aided design and hydroforming of body panels, rather, it’s how an automaker shows restraint that defines its true understanding of style.
The A5 Cabriolet’s flowing creases and bodylines evoke a vehicle with style that will outlast contemporary aesthetic fads. Sort of like how the polo and khaki’s outlasted piano neckties, and will certainly outlast skinny jeans and plaid shirts. As a New Englander, it’s this timeless style that would make it outside the ionic Greenwich Concours d’Elegance.
Not long ago, a four-cylinder engine was lucky enough to break 160 horsepower, but the TFSI 2.0-liter four-pot in the current A5 develops 220 horsepower and an all-important 258 pound-feet of toque. Power is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and available Quattro all-wheel drive, managed by an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission.
Quattro provides competent driving in tough winter conditions. Slide a pair of skis through the rear seat pass-through, and this would make for a much better chariot up to the mountains than a brutish SUV.
While many automakers are turning to the rigid benefits of a retractable folding hard top, Audi has erred on the side of tradition, but in a very high-tech way. The folding soft top retracts in just 17 seconds, and at speeds up to 31 miles per hour.
With available heated seats and neck-level heating system, I’d cruise with the top down on a crisp fall morning to a Cars and Coffee gathering at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum, in the hills just outside Boston.
This top delivers true four-season comfort and protection from the elements, but with a classic flair and style that stretches far beyond the contemporary retractable hard tops. That’s the true nature of the A5 Cabriolet– it’s a vehicle fitted with the latest in powertrain, chassis and infotainment technologies, but wrapped in a style that make it an instant classic, and will remain a fetching vehicle to own and seek out for years to come.
