Weather Permitting: Warm days and the possibility of rain in forecast this week

It looks like the Cape Fear region will make it through April without a 90-degree day —barely.

Fayetteville officially hit 89 degrees twice, but couldn't coax that extra degree. Barring something unexpected, we'll stay in the mid-to-upper 80s through this week, with a slight chance of some light showers Tuesday night, then again this weekend.

Look for that pattern to continue into May. High pressure will protect the Carolinas from the horrific storms that rolled to our west over the weekend. The result is fairly tranquil, if warm, days and mild nights.

Here's the setup

High pressure has been sitting offshore all weekend, and it should have little trouble fending off a weak cold front approaching the area late Tuesday. After that, the high will rebuild over the Carolinas, giving us warm, dry weather.

Temperatures will remain well above normal for late April.

Monday and Tuesday will be warm, with highs of about 85 and lows of 60. By late Tuesday, look for some clouds and widely scattered light showers as a weak cold front tries to break through. Most activity should be to our north.

The chance of showers continues Wednesday, depending on how far south that cold front reaches. Again, any rainfall will be light and widely scattered. Odds are most of us won't get a break from watering the garden. Highs in Fayetteville should again reach 85, with lows of about 62.

There's a slight chance of showers arriving Tuesday evening.

Thursday will see winds swing around to the east and northeast, holding highs in Fayetteville to about 85. Things look similar on Friday, with a chance of increasing clouds. Another weak cold front should be approaching, increasing the chances for scattered showers Friday night into Saturday morning. Rain chances will be better to the west.

All in all, a fairly quiet stretch of weather is coming up. Have a great, if warm, week!
