Weather Alert: Severe storms threaten Rochester region

For the third straight day, a hot and humid day with highs in the upper 80s is predicted for the Rochester region, however, there is a risk for severe thunderstorms to blow through western and central New York Wednesday, which could bring some heavy rain, strong winds and large hail, said Meteorologist Steve Welch with the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Rochester could see a thunderstorm move through the region sometime between mid-afternoon and early evening, Welch said.

Wednesday's high temperature is expected to reach 88 on Wednesday, which is not expected to exceed the daily record high of 92 degrees, which was set in 1911, Welch said. The predicted heat marks the third consecutive day of well-above average temperatures in Rochester, the the mercury has been steadily rising for the last week. The high reached 88 on Tuesday and 86 on Monday at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, where the Weather Service records Rochester's official temperatures. The normal high in Rochester for the third week of May is in the low 70s, according to the Weather Service.

Memorial Day 2024 forecast for Rochester NY region

Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, highs are expected to feel closer to normal, with predicted highs in the mid- to upper 70s through Sunday - and as of now - a rainy Saturday. Memorial Day is currently predicted to be cooler with a high with a chance of showers, according to the Weather Service.
