Weather Alert: Severe storms expected in Rochester region
The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a special weather statement for the following areas: Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, and Ontario counties, including the cities of Newark, Fair Haven, Oswego, Watertown, Lowville, and Canandaigua.
This afternoon, thunderstorms are expected to develop with an elevated risk of becoming strong to severe, particularly after 2 p.m. in the eastern Lake Ontario region. Some storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.
In addition to the risk of severe weather, primarily in the form of damaging straight-line winds, many thunderstorms will bring torrential downpours.
Rainfall rates of an inch or two within an hour could lead to localized flooding, especially in urban areas and regions with elevated terrain.
The threat for strong/severe thunderstorms continues for this afternoon/evening. North central NY & the northern Finger Lakes have been added to a 'Slight Risk' area by the Storm Prediction Center, while WNY remains in a 'Marginal Risk' area.
