Weapon found at Granby school

GRANBY, Mo. — Administrators with East Newton Schools confirm a gun was found and confiscated on school grounds.

The district told us a student reported seeing a weapon on the Granby school campus before alerting faculty sometime Thursday, April 18. Administrators then contacted a school resource officer who located and took an unloaded gun from a backpack. The backpack belonged to a Granby elementary student (grades ones through four).

Officials said they had no indication or report that a weapon would be on school property ahead of time. They add that this case is a good example of when a student sees something — they should say something.

“Hats off to the student that reported it. I mean, they did this exactly the way we tell our students to do it, and we want every student everywhere to do it, and that is they saw something they didn’t like and they reported it immediately,” said Scott Charlton, East Newton R-VI Schools Superintendent.

The Newton County Juvenile Office was also contacted and is helping with the investigation.

Superintendent Charlton says the school district alerted parents of the situation by email, and that no threats were made to any student.

This is the first time a gun has ever been discovered on school property.
